Abstract

1423046 Laminated sports rackets DUNLOP LTD 25 April 1974 [5 May 1973] 21522/73 Heading A6D [Also in Divisions B4 and B5] A frame for a sports racket, e.g. tennis, badminton or squash in which at least part of the frame is formed from a laminate having layers of wood and resin-impregnated aromatic polyamide fibre, the fibre having a material density not less than 1.6 x 10<SP>3</SP> kg/m<SP>3</SP>. The entire frame or just the head portion may be so formed. The laminates may consist of either several relatively-thin layers of the aforementioned fibre or fewer (e.g. one) relatively-thicker layers, sandwiched in one of a number of ways between layers of beech and ash of a specified thickness. The fibre preferably has a Young's Modulus greater than a specified value and should be compatible with wood from the point of view of such manufacturing operations as machining, cutting and drilling. The fibre is also preferably in sheet form, either as a woven fabric or oriented uni-axially, and may be pre-impregnated with resin and even pre-cured. Preferably the resin-impregnated layer should consist of a specified percentage, by weight, of fibre. The resin may be one of the following types: epoxy, phenolic, polyester or urea-formaldehyde.
