Abstract

1422965 Regenerative braking of DC motors BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD 12 June 1973 [14 March 1972] 11811/72 Heading H2J A D.C. series motor having an armature 9 and a field winding 10 is supplied from a D.C. supply 1 by a chopper circuit including a thyristor 2, the circuit also including an energy storage device comprising an inductor 4 and a capacitor 5 chargeable by means of a thyristor 3, firing of a further thyristor 6 placing the capacitor voltage across the field winding 10 and at the cathode of the thyristor 2 to commutate it, the currents in the armature 9 and field winding 10 which exist at the moment of commutation then being diverted to flow in diodes 8, 7 respectively so that the armature and field currents freewheel separately thus no commutation voltage appears at the armature terminals and no torque is developed. Regeneration is provided by a diode 12 and inductor 13, the main thyristor 2 not being used in regeneration. A switch 15 is provided to disconnect the field winding 10 if desired.
