Abstract
1422887 Ice-melting device TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 6 Dec 1973 [15 Jan 1973] 56468/73 Heading C4X An ice-melting device comprises a package having at least two compartments for separate storage of ingredients of an exothermic icemelting composition, means for dispensing the ingredients of the composition simultaneously for exothermic reaction with each other and for heating the resultant ice-melting composition, a first one of the compartments containing an oxidant, a second one of said compartments containing a reductant composition comprising a reductant and a tungstate, molybdate, phosphotungstate, phosphomolybdate or molybdotungstate as accelerator-catalyst, and one compartment containing an alcohol, glycol or glycol ether as anti-freeze. Ice is melted by dispensing on to an ice-covered surface the contents of the device whereby the oxidant and the reductant composition are mixed and react exothermically thereby increasing the temperature of the antifreeze and its ability to assist in melting and removal of ice. The device may comprise a compressed gas propellant for expelling the ingredients from the compartments, e.g. a mixture of isobutane and propane or carbon dioxide. The anti-freeze may be in the same compartment as the reductant composition or in a third compartment. Suitable oxidants are peroxides, perborates or persulphates, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, urea hydrogen peroxide, sodium peroxide, sodium perborate, sodium persulphate, ammonium persulphate or potassium persulphate. The first compartment may contain an oxidant composition containing an oxidant stabilizer e.g. acetanilide, phenacetin, sodium stannate, potassium stannate or disodium hydrogen phosphate. The reductant may be a urea, borane or aldehyde, e.g. thiourea, a thiobarbituric acid derivative, an alkylamine borane, formaldehyde or formic acid or may be ferrous sulphate, sodium thiosulphate or triethylphosphate. Suitable anti-freezes are methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol, glycerol, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol, 1,3-propane diol, 1,4-butane diol, hexylene glycol and ethylene glycol monomethyl ether.
