Abstract

1422631 Ultraviolet dosimeters IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 March 1973 [10 March 1972] 11283/72 Heading H5R An ultra-violet radiation dosimeter comprises an element which changes colour in response to such radiation in the wavelength range 280- 320 nm. in combination with a graded filter which causes differing amounts of radiation to reach different areas of the element and a colour standard which can be compared with the exposed areas to determine the total amount of radiation received. Fig. 2 shows a dosimeter constructed as a laminated package with an enlarged sectional view. A base layer 1 of titanium dioxide pigmented polyethylene terephthalate has a coating 3 of 2 : 5 molar ratio blend of polyvinyl alcohol/polyvinyl chloroacetate copolymer on which is the sensitive element 4 which consists of polyvinyl alcohol containing 10% N,N<SP>1</SP> dimethyl - 4,4<SP>1</SP> - bipyridylium dimethosulphate. An Alloprene (Registered Trade Mark) coating 5 carries the filter 6 of polystyrene having different concentrations of BBOT to give different transmissions. The package is sealed between films 8, 9 of polypropylene. Other sensitive materials are biquinolyl salts, bis-(pyridinium)ethylene salts and diazapyrinium salts.
