Abstract
1422249 Automatic control of speed BURROUGHS CORP 2 May 1973 20838/73 Heading G3R A reel to reel tape transport system has the speed of the drive reel controlled to keep the linear speed of the tape at a constant commanded level by deriving the linear speed from the product of signals representing the instantaneous angular velocity and effective radius of one of the reels and comparing the signal so derived with a reference signal to produce an error signal which is applied to the drive reel motor controller. In the system shown, a photo-electric pulse generator 34 followed by a pulse shaping network 40 and monostable circuit 42 is used to provide a train of standard pulses Vm whose repetition rate corresponds to the angular velocity of the supply reel Rs. This pulse train is integrated at 46 to produce a voltage proportional to the speed of the supply reel Ws. Additionally the pulses Vm pass to a counter 52 which is pre-set with a value corresponding to the largest effective radius of the supply reel and counts down on receipt of each pulse so that at every instant the value in the counter represents the effective radius is of the reel. After conversion at 54 the signal rs and ws are multiplied in a four quadrant multiplier 58 to produce a linear speed signal Vo which is compared at 20 with a desired speed signal Vc from generator 2. The error signal VER is used to control the conduction of a transistor in the circuit of drive motor Md, Fig. 3 (not shown). An analogue system for controlling the linear speed of a tape is disclosed in Specification 1422250.
