1422035 Shelf stoppering apparatus PENNWALT CORP 14 Nov 1973 52809/73 Heading B8T [Also in Division F4] Adjustable shelf stoppering apparatus, particularly for vacuum capping bottles in a vacuum drying apparatus comprises vertically disposed plate members C spaced from the sides of the apparatus A and including a plurality of holes at predetermined vertical levels for supporting shelves B1-B11 in equally spaced disposition, sets of pins 36 received in selective holes to define a series of vertical levels to accommodate predetermined bottle sizes, a plurality of shelves B1-B11 including fingers 32 at the edges thereof for resting engagement on the respective pins 36 and means for elevating the lowermost shelf B1 until the caps of bottles on the respective shelves abut against the next shelf thereabove to squeeze the caps into sealing engagement with the bottles. The spacing of the shelves is determined according to the formula where Sn=spacing between shelves for n shelves, T=total distance between ceiling and lowermost shelf, n=total number of active shelves, n i = number of inactive shelves and t = shelf thickness. The fingers 32 on the respective shelves are shorter in length in descending shelf order so that interference is avoided when the shelves are elevated. The inactive shelves n i are arranged to rest on an adjacent active shelf, e.g. in the case of a total of 10 shelves, one of which is to be inactive, shelf B2 is rested on lowermost shelf B1 for movement therewith, the remaining shelves being distributed to give 9 equal spaces. The shelves are elevated by lifting rods 30 attached to frame 66 which is raised or lowered by screw jacks.
