Abstract
1421798 Removal of acidic impurities from organic liquids DOW CHEMICAL CO 21 Aug 1973 39390/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] Acidic contaminants in water-immiscible organic liquids are neutralized by contacting the liquid with a solid, homogeneous composition consisting of (1) 5-95 parts by wt. NaOH and (2) 95-5 parts by wt. Ca(OH) 2 and/or CaO. The composition may be a physical mixture, solid solution or compound formed by heating molten or concentrated aqueous NaOH with CaO, Ca(OH) 2 , or CaCO 3 . Preferably 0À5-5% by wt. of a water-miscible alcohol is added to the organic liquid to prevent build-up of salts on the surface of the alkali granules. The feed stock may be passed upwardly through a cylindrical bed of alkali resting on a liquid-permeable support below which there is a sump containing water or aqueous alkali. Examples describe the treatment of tert butylacetophenone and a mixture thereof with t-butyl phenethyl alcohol which contain tert butylbenzoic acid as contaminant.
