Abstract
1421762 Electromagnetic holding devices SCOMAGG Ltd 2 March 1973 [4 March 1972] 10229/72 Heading H1P Electromagnetic lifting apparatus for manipulating slabs of ferromagnetic material in steelworks comprises (Fig. 1) two longitudinally spaced electromagnetic devices suspended from a longitudinal beam 2 by bridles 4 for positioning over a slab 5 required to be inverted on a supporting surface. Each electromagnetic device (Fig. 7) comprises three equispaced heads 7, 8, 9 disposed symmetrically and transversely of the beam; each having plural longitudinally spaced rectangular blocks 10 separated by plural energizing coils therebetween; cranked arms 12 pivoted on stub shafts 11 coaxial with the coils interconnecting the heads for relative pivotal up and down and rotational rocking motions. The bridles extend from longitudinal pins 13 of the beam and corresponding pins on the outer faces of blocks 10 so that the aperture underfaces of heads 7, 8, 9 are angled to the horizontal when suspended and horizontal when resting on a surface (Fig. 8, not shown). In operation (Figs. 2 to 6, not shown) a first pair of heads 7 engages the top flat surface of a slab 5 and are energized; the assembly is raised to tilt the slab about a longitudinal edge until a second pair of heads 8 engages a side face of the slab and is energized, and the latter is raised to rest on its longitudinal edge, when heads 7 are de-energized. The assembly is then lowered to tilt the slab so that a third pair of heads 9 engages its reverse face and is energized; and the assembly is further lowered. Heads 8 are de-energized and the inverted slab is deposited on the flat surface, after which heads 9 are de-energized. Selective energization is achieved by sequential switching.
