Abstract

1421751 Mounting spindles BONEHAM & TURNER Ltd 16 March 1973 [6 April 1972] 15867/72 Heading B3B [Also in Division F2] A machine tool spindle assembly comprises at least one bearing assembly 9a-9d for rotatably supporting the spindle 12 in a housing 11, the bearing assembly being capable of accommodating axial and radial thrust loads, and fluid pressure operated means capable of applying an axial loading to the spindle to oppose thrust applied to the bearing assembly. In operation, fluid supplied through ducts 42, 43 to chambers 28, 31 causes the spindle to move to the right (as seen in Fig. 1), and fluid supplied through ducts 41 to chamber 27 causes the spindle to move to the left. Excess fluid drains through ducts 44-46. The bearing assembly may comprise angular contact ball bearings, or axial and radial cylindrical roller bearings. The spindle is also supported by a further bearing.8, the outer or inner races of which can be preloaded by means of coiled springs 70 contained within bores 62, or alternatively by fluid operated pistons 66 in bores 65.
