1421749 Clamps ROBERTS CONSOLIDATED INDUSTRIES INC 21 Dec 1972 58986/72 Heading E2B [Also in Division A4] The pole of a carpet stretcher includes at least one assembly comprising outer and inner telescoping tubular members 10, 12, an elongate locking member 26 secured at one end in a block 22 fixed in tube 10 with its other end projecting into tube 12 and secured in a bearing sleeve 28 that slides in tube 12, a locking collar 32 surrounding member 26 and loosely mounted to tube 12 by a pin 36 so as to be tiltable between a first locking position in engagement with member 26 to prevent retraction of the tubes and a second position releasing said collar 32 from said member 26 and permitting relative movement between the tubes, the collar 32 being urged into looking engagement with member 26 by a spring 42 seated in a collar 30 secured to tube 12, and a manually operable release collar 20 that can be slid to release the collar 32 against the spring 42 through a rod 48. Member 26 is mounted in block 22 and sleeve 28 with limited radial movement to allow alignment. Sleeve 28 and collar 32 abut to limit extension. In a first modification (Fig. 5, not shown), the locking collar (66) is released by a pivoted lever 76 via a tube (60). In a second modification (Fig. 7, not shown), the locking collar may be replaced by a stack of sheets (120). Tubes 10 and 12 include apertures 14 and spring biased buttons 18 for attachment to a tube (35, Fig. 2, not shown) that connects to wall plate (41), and a tube (15) of the stretcher head that includes a pivoted lever (19) with a lever (23) that has a linking cable (25) to release a pawl and rack to allow extension of a shaft (13) from tube (15). In a further modification (Fig. 8, not shown) the cable (25) can also release the locking collar via a link (110) and a cam lever (106).
