Abstract

1421536 Self lubricating rubbers DOW CORNING CORP 11 May 1973 [18 May 1972] 23515/72 Headings C3T C3P and C3Q An elastomer-forming composition comprises 100 p.b.w. of a vulcanizable organic or organosiloxane rubber stock and 15-50 p.b.w. of rigid particles of average diameter below 500 microns which comprise a dispersion in an epoxy resin or phenolic resin binder of one or more solid lubricants. Preferably the rubber stock comprises a methyl vinyl polysiloxane and a reinforcing silica filler. Suitable lubricants are the sulphides, selenides or tellurides of Mo, W, Ta, Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb or Th, or graphite, PTFE or boron nitride; reinforcing fillers, e.g. ZnS, ZnO, CaF 2 , K 2 TiO 3 or Sb 2 O 3 , may be mixed with these; preferably the particles have been treated with a coupling agent, e.g. a silane. In the examples 100 p.b.w. of a rubber stock containing 100 p.b.w. of an Me 2 ViSiO-terminated polydimethylsiloxane containing 0À142 mol. per cent MeViSiO units, 45 p.b.w. of fume silica and 1 p.b.w. of 2 : 5-di-t-butylperoxy- 2 : 5-dimethyl-hexane is compounded with 20- 50 p.b.w. of particles of size 90-150 or 150- 315 microns, obtained by milling 40 p.b.w. MoS 2 and 40 p.b.w. ZnS with 16À7 p.b.w. of an epoxy resin and 3À3 p.b.w. of cyclopentane tetracarboxylic dianhydride, used directly or after treatment with the composition obtained being vulcanized in a conventional manner. Uses.-Oil seals.
