Abstract
1421039 Slack adjusters SEGARIC SA 27 Feb 1973 9683/73 Heading F2E An automatic adjuster for a spring applied electromagnetically released disc brake in which one pad 4 is applied via a rod 5 and the other 3 by reaction as the caliper slides, has two adjustment spacers 9, 9<SP>1</SP> for compensating wear of the friction linings 41, 31 and for maintaining a constant magnetic air gap (e). In the inoperative position of the disc brake, a movable armature 62 is applied against the pole faces of a yoke 61, and through a ring 64 compresses the apply spring 7 and releases the shoe 4 from the disc 2 by means of a spring 8 which transmits a force through a washer 81 to a stop ring 82 and spacer 9<SP>1</SP> sufficient to keep a spring washer 66 compressed against a stop ring 67. To apply the brake, the excitation of electromagnet 6 is cut off and spring 7 pushes ring 64 and armature 62, and through spacer 9 the shoe 4 to the right. The rod 5 follows this movement, spacer 9<SP>1</SP> being correspondingly moved by washer 66 until it abuts a shoulder 65 at the same time as the lining 41 engages the disc 2. If lining wear has occurred, spring 7 continues to expand so that the magnetic air gap (e<SP>1</SP>) becomes greater than desired. The stop ring 82 then separates from the spacer 9<SP>1</SP> which is relieved of compression forces and a torsion spring 96 located between the ends of rings 91, 92 having helical bearing surfaces 94, 95 of irreversible pitch causes rotation of one of the rings, the other being fixed, so that the spacer 9<SP>1</SP> is extended in axial length. On re-excitation of electromagnet 6, armature 62 must carry out a displacement (e<SP>1</SP>) in order to contact yoke 61. Since spacer 9<SP>1</SP> can move only a distance (e) due to the adjustment, spring 8 is compressed to a value (e<SP>1</SP>) - (e). The compression on the spacer 9<SP>1</SP> is thereby relieved causing its spring 96 to rotate one ring relative to the other until the extension compensates the stroke supplement (e<SP>1</SP>) - (e). A rotary lever 5 may be used to relieve the braking if electromagnet 6 fails.
