Abstract

1295000 Electromagnetic clutches or brakes; wear-compensating MASCHINENFABRIK HANS LENZE KG 21 April 1970 [21 April 1969 (2)] 52973/71 Divided out of 1293822 Headings F2C and F2E In a clutch or brake mechanism having a rotor 5, friction elements 6, 7, associated with the rotor, a solenoid 3, a magnetic core 2 receiving the solenoid, an armature 4 resiliently urged (e.g. by springs 14) into engagement with the friction elements and movable out of engagement by the solenoid 3, and an adjustment device 10, 12, 13 to compensate for wear of the friction faces, at least one axially-held guiding bolt 8 extends through the armature and core, and in the absence of wear, magnetic core 2 is not moved axially while armature 4 is moved a certain distance to left and right on engagement and disengagement respectively, but when wear has occurred, armature 4 is moved a further small distance to the left to a new region, and core 2 is moved to the left by attraction between the solenoid 3 and the armature, to restore the "brakes on" air gap to its normal value. Fig. 1 shows a spring-applied, electromagnetically-released, brake where an axially-displaceable rotor 5 with annular friction elements 6, 7 is mounted on the shaft to be braked between a stationary brake flange 1 and an axially displaceable armature 4. Bolts 8 are fixed in the flange 1 and each bolt carries one one-wayacting resilient locking element 12 and two such elements 10 for supporting armature 4 and magnetic core 2 respectively. The depth of cavity 11 is equal to the axial length of element 12 plus the normal length of the armature stroke. In operation, assuming no wear has occurred, when solenoid 3 is do-energized, brake operating spring 14 pushes armature 4 to the left to apply the brake, element 12 being now located against closure disc 13. Spring 14, acting to the right against elements 10, locks them (and hence core 2) against rightward movement. If wear has occurred, spring 14 moves armature 4 and disc 12 that much further along bolt 8. On energization of solenoid 3, armature 4 is withdrawn only its normal distance, whereupon the base of cavity 11 contacts element 12 and further movement is thereby prevented. How. ever, core 2 is enabled by the continuing electromagnetic attraction to move to the left, elements 10 permitting movement along bolt 8 in this direction. Armature 4 and core 2 are now in their new positions and the normal distance between them is restored. Also the preloading of spring 14 by screw 17 and nut 18 is restored to its former value. (Core 2 is resilieritly supported from armature 4 by bolts 15 and springs 16). Fig. 2 is the device of Fig. 1 slightly modified to form a clutch; magnetic core 20 is keyed to the driving shaft (not shown) and rotates with housing 1 secured to it. Current is supplied to solenoid 3 by a slip-ring 19; bolts 8 are held in rotating housing 1.
