1420982 Lamps J S ZAND and A R TERRE 9 May 1973 22154/73 Heading F4R [Also in Divisions G4-G6] Moving apparatus alternates between two different display shapes which may be two- or three-dimensional, the apparatus consisting of a group of identical display elements, such as 90 degree segment cylinders 1, symmetrically mounted on pivots 2, 3 about a common drive shaft 7 reversibly driven by motor means 13, 15 in a cyclical manner such that the large wheel 8 rotates cylinders 1, first in one direction to provide the composite shape of Fig. 11, then in the opposite direction to provide the shape of Fig. 12, the drive being through small wheels 9. The wheels 8, 9 are contained in a housing 4 rigidly connected to bottom support 5 by tube 6 with a conical friction clutch 10 reacting in socket 11 of fixed base 12. When the drive reverses, the friction at clutch 10 ensures that the cylinders 1 rotate to their alternate end positions before the display as a whole rotates. The motor may be electric, hydraulic, pneumatic or mechanical, or a hand-operated lever may be used. The walls of cylinders 1 may be transparent, translucent, or opaque, and may carry advertising or pictorial matter. Internal illumination is possible, and the walls may be of patterned glass or plastics, diffraction gratings, half-tone screens, lenticular screens, fresnel lenses, colour transparencies halograms, mirrors, and other optical devices.
