1420938 Making wafer sandwiches HEBENSTREIT GmbH 21 Dec 1972 [25 March 1972] 59229/72 Heading A2A [Also in Division B8] A device for the production of wafer sandwiches consisting of filled wafer bases 53, Fig. 2, and wafer covers 51, comprises two endless conveyer belts 22, 10, Fig. 1, disposed end-toend at the same level, the conveyer 10 moving faster than the conveyer 22 to separate the wafers, and wherein the conveyer 22 is fed with wafer bases 53 which pass under a filling device 82, the conveyer 10 being fed from a wafer cover storing device 41 by a conveyer belt 39 and, projecting into the track of the conveyer 10, a movable stop 28 where a wafer cover 51 is aligned with and placed on a wafer base 53, the stop 28 being removed subsequently for the upward passage of the wafer sandwich. Several such devices may be arranged sequentially if multi-layer wafer sandwiches are desired. Filling Device: The wafer bases 53 are fed to a box 77 above a conveyer belt 75 which feeds the bottom base 53, through a slot 78 and under a roller 79, to the conveyer 22 which rests on stands 23, 80 and is supported by cross-beams 81. The bases 53 are filled from a hopper 85 in the filling device 82. A drive 86 controls two rollers 83, 84 which deposit a layer of filling on the bases 53. An adjustable bridge 87 supports the wafer bases 53 while they are coated with the filling and the filled bases are passed from the conveyer 22 to the conveyer 10 which is supported on stands 23, 24. Covering Device: Wafer covers 51 are stacked in a box 41 and fed by a conveyer belt 39 through a slot 43 under a roller 40 to an inclined track 46 between guides 47, 57. A drive 45 causes a roller 44 to feed the covers 51 rapidly to a covering station at which a cover 51 is held in an inclined position between the stop 28 and a loop 32 which is held by a spring against a stop 33. A switch 48 monitors the delivery of a cover 51 to the covering station, after which the switch 48 stops the conveyor 39 through an electrically operated coupling 37. The conveyer 10 consists of several spaced belts between which a finger 25 projects such that it is deflected by a passing wafer base 53 and actuates a switch 27 which controls, via the coupling 37, the release of wafer covers 51 from the box 41. The switch 27 also actuates, via a delay unit, a solenoid 30 which controls the stop 28 which consists of fingers projecting between the individual belts of the conveyer 10 and rotary magnet 35 which deflects the loop 32 towards a stop 34 to release the wafer cover 51 on to the filled base 53 when it reaches the stop 28. When the wafer sandwich is formed, the solenoid 30 retracts the fingers of the stop 28 and allows the completed sandwich to pass over a stripper 54 which prevents wafer bases 53 from entering the return section of the conveyer 10. Calibration Device: The conveyer 10 passes the wafer sandwiches to a calibration device 58 which has two rollers 59, 60 whose separation determines the height of the sandwich. The roller 59 is mounted in a bearing block whose height can be adjusted by rotating a threaded spindle 70. Drive Mechanism: A motor 18 drives the conveyor belt 10 and also the rollers 59, 60 which are coupled by drive wheels 63-66. A roller 13 of the conveyer 10 is coupled to a roller 21 of the conveyer 22 by a reducing gear 19, 20 and a roller 71 of the conveyer 22 is coupled to a roller 74 of the conveyer 75. The roller 13 also drives the coupling 37 of the conveyer 39. The conveyers 10, 22, 39 and 75 are all driven in the same direction.
