Abstract

1420919 Escape boom for offshore structure RESOLUTION ENG & DEVELOPMENT CO 29 Dec 1972 [30 Dec 1971] 60688/71 Heading E1H In order to evacuate personnel from an offshore structure 26, a boom 24 is pivoted at one end 28 to the structure, and is biased from its normal position adjacent the structure by, e.g. gravity to a position in which the outer end of the boom 24 is spaced from the structure. At least one lifeline preferably extends from the platform 16 of structure 26 to a head 30 pivoted to the outer end of boom 24. The boom is hollow and is divided internally into a plurality of compartments 58, 60 which are trimmed so that the pivoting of the boom is controlled, and the beam itself has slight negative buoyancy, the combined boom and head having positive buoyancy. In another embodiment the boom is pivoted at its upper end to the platform 16, the other end of the boom being held below water when not in use Fig. 8 (not shown). When in use the boom is raised by buoyancy, and may provide a stairway from the platform to the head (76), being provided with steps and a rail in addition to the lifelines. In a further embodiment, Fig. 9, a counter weighted boom 98 is held when not in use, in a horizontal position adjacent platform 16. When released, a turntable (112) Fig. 10 (not shown) combined with a cam and cam follower arrangement pivot the boom away from the platform and lower the head 102 to the water surface. Various life saving equipment may be stored in the head at the end of the boom.
