Abstract
1420917 Automatic headway control LUCAS INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 Nov 1972 [18 Dec 1971] 58913/71 Heading G3R [Also in Divisions H3-5] A vehicle radar 11 controls the speed of the vehicle to maintain a predetermined headway and utilizes a frequency modulated continuous carrier of not less than 26GHz, the modulation waveform having portions of continuously varying frequency, Fig. 3 (not shown). A pulse counter 14 affords a digital output representing the distance h to the vehicle ahead and #h. A speed sensor 22 derived output and the analogue of the counter output after scaling afford an error signal from amplifier 18 to actuate throttle control 28 and brake control 29 as required. A reference source 27 is provided to adjust the change-over between throttle and braking control. Gunn diode oscillators. The radar "head" incorporates a sawtooth generator (43), a Gunn diode oscillator (41) and a balanced mixer (46) affording the distance-dependent difference frequency output, Fig. 2 (not shown).
