Abstract

The system can operate in fog and vehicle control signals are derived from the receiver. A moving vehicle (V1) carries a transmitter receiver operating in association with responders (V2, V2o) comprising a reflector (6) in front of which is a liquid crystal (5) connected to a modulator (7). An identical responder (8, 9, 10) operates in the opposite direction. The transmitter (1) comprises a diode laser modulated by a generator (11). Received signals (12) are frequency transposed (17, 18) by two frequency generators (13, 14) to obtain the required information. After filtering (19) the signals are passed to a tracking loop (20) connected to a counter (23 to 27) followed by a digital to analogue converter (25, to 29) to give distance data. The diode laser is responsive to wavelength of from one to several microns.
