1420900 Preventing frost heaves in soil; road foundations CHEMIE LINZ AG 15 May 1974 [8 June 1973] 21647/74 Headings E1F and E1G Frost heaves in fine grained soils such as used in foundations of roads is prevented by interrupting the transport of water in the capillaries of the soil in the region of the frost boundary 3 in the soil by inserting in the soil at said region a coarse-pored filter layer 5 which is protected on its upper and lower sides 4, 6 against contamination by particles of said fine soil, by the application to said sides of a permeable, rot proof web of fabric, felt or fleece. The filter layer may comprise loosely introduced grains having interspaces sufficiently large so that water will not be held in the layer by capillary action. The grains may be gravel, slag or particles of plastics material. Alternatively the filter layer may be a solid porous body having pores that permit seepage water to pass vertically the body and in at least one horizontal direction without being hindered by capillary action. The body may be in the form of a mat or plate. The filter layer is preferably constructed with a thickness of at least 10 cms and with a grain diameter of 4 to 50 mm. The fleece may be a fibre fleece of thermoplastics synthetic resin, e.g. a polyolefine or a spun fleece of continuous filaments. The upper fine soil may be laterally sealed off to the entry of water from adjacent soil layers. In such a road foundation the filter layer is sloped down to drains if such drains are provided at the sides of the foundation or the side edges of the layer, if no such drains are provided, are raised up and sealed against entry of surface waters.
