Abstract

1420855 Electrographic development ALLCO 30 Aug 1973 [5 Sept 1972 2 March 1973] 40770/73 Heading G2H Electrographic paper 1 is intermittently fed, from left to right as shown in Fig. 1, from an electrostatic printer, e.g. a computer print out, through a developing apparatus in which the paper 1 forms the bottom of a developer enclosure 4, and a wall 6 is displaceable to vary the length of the paper that is contacted by liquid developer at any one time such that each incremental length of the paper 1 remains in contact with the developer 7 for a substantially equal predetermined time. The displacement of the wall 6 is controlled by the incremental displacement of the paper 1 by means of a circuit, that includes a shift register and a summator, that provides pulses to drive a reversible motor connected to the shaft 10 of a pinion 9 that engages a rack portion of a rod 8 that carries the wall 6. The printer comprises a printing electrode 2 and a counter electrode 3. In another embodiment, Fig. 6 the electrode 2 is embedded within the thickness of a stationary wall 32 of the enclosure, a displaceable wall 33 being connected to the wall 32 by a bellows 34. In yet other embodiments, the developer is sprayed vertically upwards or sideways against the paper 1 which is travelling vertically or horizontally respectively, the length of the paper contacted with the developer being controlled by a shutter or partition that is displaceable to shield varying lengths of the paper 1 from the developer spray.
