Abstract
1420412 Valves ZENTRA ALBERT BURKLE KG 8 March 1973 [8 March 1972 4 Jan 1973] 11289/73 Heading F2V [Also in Divisions G1 and H1] A self-monitoring pressure or temperature sensing device to actuate, e.g. a valve, comprises a hollow expansion member 11 containing a fluid the pressure of which is dependent on the pressure or temperature being sensed and having a movable wall portion 19 forming a partition between the interior of the expansion member and a hermetically sealed chamber 10 containing a gas at higher pressure than the fluid in the expansion member 11, the wall 19 being spring- loaded to urge it in a direction to reduce the volume of the sealed chamber 10, an indication being produced when any wall of the sealed chamber 10 is punctured. The fluid in the expansion member 11 is a gas or a liquid for pressure monitoring, or a gas, a liquid, a wax, a liquid-vapour system, or a gas in conjunction with an adsorptive substance, for temperature monitoring. Fig. 3 shows a device for regulating or monitoring pneumatic or hydraulic pressure in a pipe 40. A bellows 14<SP>1</SP> in the pipe is connected by a capillary tube 13 to a bellows 12 in a sealed vessel 10, the system 12, 13, 14<SP>1</SP> forming the expansion member 11. The bellows 12, 14<SP>1</SP> contain compression springs 20, 47. The free end 19 of bellows 12 acts via a lever 22 on a member 24, e.g. a valve controlling member of a valve for the pipe 40. The lever 22 is loaded by a compression spring 23. To avoid ambient temperature influence on the apparatus, the gas 16 in the vessel 10 is maintained at constant temperature by a bimetallic thermostat 42 controlling a heat element 43. If a leak in tube 13 or bellows 14<SP>1</SP> allows the bellows 14<SP>1</SP>, 12 to collapse, the lever 22 trips an alarm or safety switch 41. If a leak in the bellows 12 or vessel 10 occurs, the lever 22 is moved to an extreme (chain dotted) safety position to close the valve. Fig. 1, not shown, relates to a similar apparatus for temperature monitoring, the ambient temperature compensation being omitted in this case.
