Abstract

1420399 Orientating TANGEN DRIVES Inc 20 Aug 1973 [21 Aug 1972] 39274/73 Heading B8S A feeder and orientor for shallow caps c comprises a power sorter 20 fed from a rotary feeder 15, the caps c being delivered to the sorter 20, in line and on edge from a random dispersal in the feeder, and the sorter 20 delivering the caps into one of two inversion cage tracks 50 depending on the facing direction of the cap open end, the tracks 50 delivering all caps c similarly orientated to a printer 11. The caps c are dumped on to a rotary core 24 from a hopper 16 on the feeder 15, and spiders 18 maintain the level of caps, the feeder being tiltable to adjust discharge therefrom. A plough separator 35 and a pressure jet separator 30 on the feeder 15 reduce to a single layer, the caps c at the periphery of the feeder, and a friction band 36 on the periphery of the core 24 accelerates the peripheral row of caps to the speed of the core for delivery to a sorter feeder tube 22 which is contoured to turn caps passing therethrough from horizontal to vertical position. The sorter 20 comprises two opposed rotating wheels 40 having peripheries of flexible material, and spaced apart by a distance less than the depth of the caps c so that as an edgewise oriented cap passes between the wheels 40, the flexible wheel surface deforms into the cap open end, and biases it away from the other wheel for delivery into an associated track 50. Guides 46, 48 between the wheels 40 and tracks 50 are adjustable to cater for different sized caps.
