Abstract

1420386 Blasting PENNWALT CORP 20 March 1973 [29 March 1972] 13292/73 Heading B3D [Also in Divisions A5 B1 and B8] Apparatus for mixing abrasive particles with compressed gas comprises a reservoir 1 for the particles, a Venturi tube 12 therein, apertures 15, 16 at each end of the tube connecting with the interior of the reservoir, and a compressed gas supply through conduits 7, 9, chamber 11 and nozzle 13 to the Venturi whereby abrasive and gas circulate through the tube, reservoir and apertures to produce a uniform suspension. A discharge conduit 17 leads to a shut-off valve 19, flexible conduit 18 and jet discharge nozzle 20 of, e.g. tungsten carbide. The nozzle 13 is of rubber and collapses when not in use to prevent backflow of particles into the gas supply. A conduit 20 connects the gas supply 7 to the abrasive delivery conduit 17 and contains an adjustable choke valve 21. In operation the valve 19 is first closed and the valve 8 opened to pressurize the apparatus, delivery being controlled by the valve 19 and the proportion of abrasive to gas by the valve 21. Particles of 10-30 microns may be used, with gas pressures of 20-150 p.s.i. and discharge nozzles 0À018 to 0À025 inch bore. The apparatus may be used with aluminium oxide particles for trimming resistors, cutting hard, brittle materials, and etching teeth in preparation for a plastics or resinous coating, and with crystalline calcium carbonate for dental prophylaxis.
