Abstract
1420346 A breathing envelope TECNA CORP 7 Sept 1973 [7 Sept 1972] 42094/73 Heading AST A head enclosing flexible envelope 13 for inflation with breathing gas through a hose 37, is constructed with upper and lower walls of transparent, flexible material joined at their edges by adhesive or heat sealing except for an opening between one pair of edges into which is permanently secured a rigid plastics elliptical ring 8 to pass over the head of a patient and hold the upper sheet of the envelope clear thereof. The ring has a diaphragm 16 secured across its opening by an elastic band 17 which overlays the edge material of the diaphragm and engaging the groove 12 in the periphery of the ring. A circular aperture (18) Fig. 3 (not shown) is defined in the diaphragm by an annular construction through which the head of the patient is passed. The annular construction may comprise rings (19) (21) Fig. 4 (not shown) and a tubular member (24) of soft plastics material heat sealed together to form an inflatable annulus supplied via a tube 27 closable by a valve or knot (28). Alternatively, neck adjustment may be effected by a soft rubber diaphragm (71) Fig. 7 (not shown) and a soft collar (72) adjusted by a surrounding strip of material (73) faced with engaging hooks and loops. In the upper sheet of the envelope a slide closure (31) Fig. 2 (not shown) gives access to the patient and other access fittings (33) (34) have air tight caps (36). A controller 39 regulates pressure from a breathing gas source 38 in response to pressure transmissions via a tube 43 which is attached to a fitting 41 and a gauge 47 connected via a tube 46 to an access fitting 44. A further fitting (48) with a top (49) gives access for instruments to the interior of the envelope near the patients mouth. Gas can escape by leakage or through a fitting. A stiff plastics plate (61) Fig. 5 (not shown) may be used to prevent the diaphragm bulging. An intermediate humidifier 51 may be provided in the breathing gas tube.
