Abstract
1420203 Machinery safety device HIRD BROWN Ltd 29 Aug 1973 [7 Oct 1972] 46376/72 Heading F2J [Also in Division G1] A light screen comprises a plurality of sources and detectors arranged in a chain so that reception of radiation by one detector causes the energization of the next source. As shown, the sources 1a, 1b 1c, 1d, which may be GaAs LEDs, direct narrow beams of IR radiation in alternate directions across the protected area to corresponding detectors 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d, which may be Si phototransistors. Each detector is arranged to supply power to the next adjacent source on receipt of a radiation beam, a transformer 3, 4 being inserted in the path between detector 2d and source 1a. The arrangement forms a loop which self oscillates until an object intrudes into any of the beam paths. A drive circuit 10 detects the cessation of the oscillation and provides a signal to logic self checking circuit 20 controlled by cam operated microswitches 21, 22, 23 to stop the machine 30 to prevent damage or injury. An alarm may also be operated. A special switch is provided to re-establish oscillation of the barrier. The arrangement may be operated in an open loop mode using an oscillator to control the first source in the chain.
