1420084 Heating by friction HOECHST AG 18 Dec 1972 [20 Dec 1971] 58298/72 Heading F4U [Also in Division G2] In a process for heat-fixing a heat-fixable material to a carrier the required heat is generated by contact between the side of the carrier free from the material and a friction element during relative motion of the carrier and element. In heat-fixing a toner image to a paper support 1 the support is advanced around a rotatable friction roller 8 contained within a heat insulating jacket 7. The ceramic, glass or low conductivity metal alloy jacket 9 of the roller 8 is first brought to the required operating temperature by a radially movable friction element 12. The roller which is rotatable in either direction may be replaced by a belt.
