Abstract
1420041 Filling tanks SUN OIL CO OF PENNSYLVANIA 3 Jan 1973 [3 Jan 1972 14 Aug 1972] 297/73 Heading B8T [Also in Division G3] Smooth flow of liquid e.g. petroleum fuel, into a subterranean tank 1 or a bottom loading tank on a truck, is ensured by the location of a pad 9 of porous, foamed material, e.g. polyurethane, in the flow path between the end of a fillpipe 3 and the interior of the tank, the pad being positioned on the bottom of the tank. The pad 9 is inserted and removed through the fillpipe 3 by means of a metal rod 13 (Fig. 3) extending through the pad and having an upper ring 12 to which are attached looped cords 11, 15 and 16 which when pulled cause the pad to bend back on itself. The pad is inserted by means of a plunger 28 within a casing 18 and operated by a rod 21 extending above ground. The pad is compressed in the casing 18 which is lowered to the end of the fillpipe 3. The rod 21 is then lowered to push the pad out of the end of the fillpipe 3, the pad expanding to its original condition. The pad is withdrawn by means of a hook inserted down the fillpipe 3 and engaging the ring 12. In an alternative arrangement, the pad is located adjacent the opening of a fillpipe 40 extending upwardly through the bottom of the tank.
