Abstract

1419853 Alphaolefin copolymeric lubricating oil additives GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 2 April 1973 [5 April 1972 (2)] 15745/73 Heading C3P [Also in Division C5] A linear α-olefin copolymer with randomly distributed repeating units is made from (1) 70-96 mol. per cent of at least one C 5 -C 10 α-olefin monomer and (2) 30-4 mol. per cent of (a) a C 16 -C 20 α-olefin monomer or (b) a mixture of C 16 -C 24 α-olefin monomers and has formula where m=number of C atoms in the α-olefin from which the particular unit is derived. The copolymer has wt. average mol. wt. (M w )= 50,000-1,000,000 (M o /84) and number average mol. wt. (M n )=400-1,000,000 (M o /84) where M o =average mol. wt. pf the α-olefin monomer mixture. The distribution factor M w /M n is 1 to 12À5, the upper limit being 12À5 when M w = 50,000 (M o /84) and the upper limit being 2 when M w =1,000,000 (M o /84) and proportionately decreasing from 12À5 to 2 as M w increases from 5000 (M o /84) to 1,000,000 (M o /84). The copolymer may be made by reacting the α-olefin mixture at 38-121‹ C. in presence of H 2 at a partial pressure of 0À007-10À5 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> and a Ziegler-Natta catalyst (e.g. purple TiCl 3 and Al(C 2 H 5 ) 3 ) at an olefin/catalyst ratio of 300- 6000 with exclusion of O 2 . Exemplified copolymers are derived from 1-hexene, 1-octene, or 1-decene together with 1-octadecene, 1- hexadecene, 1-eicosene or mixtures of C 20 -C 24 olefins. Reaction may be carried out in presenco of a naphthenic or paraffinic lubricating oil polymer solvent to provide lubricant composition in which the copolymer acts as a viscosity improver (see Division C5).
