Abstract

Lubricating oils comprise as viscosity index improver 0.1 to 30% by weight of a block copolymer comprising stereo-regular hydrocarbon polymer blocks insoluble in oil at below 0 DEG C., and amorphous hydrocarbon polymer blocks soluble in oil at above - 20 DEG C., the copolymer being progressively solvatable in lubricating oil with increasing temperature and completely solvatable below 150 DEG C. The copolymer blocks are preferably derived from C2-C20 olefins and styrene. The lubricating oil may be of the petroleum type, e.g. those consisting of conventional base stocks or base stock blends, or synthetic, e.g. Fischer-Tropsch produced oils. The usual additives may also be present, e.g. detergents, dispersing acids, pour point depressants, anti-oxidants and known viscosity improvers.ALSO:A viscosity index improver for lubricating oil comprises a block copolymer having stereo-regular hydrocarbon polymer blocks insoluble in oil at below 0 DEG C., and amorphous hydrocarbon polymer blocks soluble in oil at above -20 DEG C., the copolymer being progressively solvatable in lubricating oil with increasing temperature and completely solvatable below 150 DEG C. Preferably, the combined molecular weight of the amorphous blocks is at least 50% of that of the stereo-regular blocks. The stereo-regular blocks may be derived from polymers and copolymers of propylene, butene, pentene, hexene and styrene; the amorphous blocks from polymers and copolymers of C2-C20 alpha-olefins. The block copolymers are generally obtained by first forming the stereo-regular blocks and then continuing the polymerization under conditions which will not form stereo-regular chains. Both polymerization stages may be effected in the same reaction zone using the batch method, or the process may be effected continuously using a two-reaction zone system. The stereo-regular polymerization is generally effected with the usual Zeigler catalysts, e.g. aluminium trialkyls or alkyl aluminium halides in combination with halides or alcoholates of transition metals such as vanadium and titanium, in an inert hydrocarbon solvent at elevated temperatures.
