Abstract

1419823 Coagulating aerosols D S SCOTT 5 Feb 1973 [4 Feb 1972] 5690/73 Heading BIT The particles in an aerosol flowing through chamber 10 are agglomerated or coagulated by setting up, by generators 18 positioned at one or more sides of chamber 10, at least one standing acoustic field having its wave front sub-' stantially parallel to the direction of aerosol flow and by propagating by generator 14, a sawtooth wave along and in the same direction as aerosol flow. The coagulated aerosol may subsequently be passed to a settling chamber. The sawtooth wave is diffused by baffles 19, 20. The cross-section of chamber 10 may increase or decrease in the direction of aerosol flow. The aerosol may be passed through a plurality of chambers 10 connected in parallel. The standing acoustic field may be generated by electrically driven generators, pulsating combustion sources, spark-gap sources and sirens, and the sawtooth wave field by membrane oscillators, horns and sirens. The standing and sawtooth fields may have a freqcency of 500-5000 Hz and 50-500 Hz respectively and a pressure of 140-165 db and 155-180 db respectively.
