Abstract
New copolymers are prepared by mixing a first hydrophilic monomer of the formula I <IMAGE> where R is hydrogen or methyl, and n is an integer from 1 to 4, with a second, essentially water-insoluble monomer of the formula II <IMAGE> where R is hydrogen or methyl, and R' is alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, in a molar ratio of from 1 : 3 to 20 : 1 and allowing the mixture to react in the virtually complete absence of water and of other diluents to form a dimensionally stable copolymer. The resulting copolymers and hydrogels thereof are suitable materials for contact lenses, membranes for dialysis purposes and articles for the gradual release of biologically active substances.
