Abstract

1419413 Distance measurement DIGITECH INSTRUMENTS Ltd 15 May 1973 23086/73 Headings G1A and G1M The movement of a device along a reference bar 11 is measured by photo-electrically sensing the rotation of a roller 31 which engages the bar. The roller can be moved in a direction arrows A, Fig. 3 transverse to the direction of movement of the device, to enable calibration of the device, but cannot be moved within the housing of the device in said direction of movement. As shown, the roller is tapered, so that for a given translational movement, a different angular movement of the roller is obtained for each position of engagement of the roller with the bar. The rotation of the roller is sensed at both ends of the roller, by lamp and photocell combinations which view markings on transparent glass or plastics discs 52. Also adjustable for focussing light on the marks are the positions of the lens 57 and lamp 58; which are carried in a housing slidably adjustable along pillar 67. The photo-cells 63 are aligned with the marks on the disc during setting up of the device and then fixed by cementing, glueing etc. The scales on the digitizer discs may provide coarse and fine measurements. The processing circuit may include conventional squaring (Schmitt trigger) circuits and digital display or control output.
