Abstract

1419355 Sugar substitute NIKKEN CHEMICALS CO Ltd 20 June 1974 27447/74 Heading A2B A maltitol sugar substitute comprises core particles containing 50% or more by weight of maltitol coated with saccharide particles having diameters half the size or less of the diameter of the core particles. The maltitol may be impure and contain sorbitol, hydrogenated digosaccharides and hydrogenated dextrin. Monosaccharides (glucose, fructose, xylose), disaccharides (sucrose, maltose, lactose and isomaltose), powder wheat gluten, dextrin, starch and cellose are specified saccharides. Other sweeteners such as saccharin and glycyrrhizin may be combined with the saccharide. The composite powder is prepared by contacting the molten surfaces of the core particles with the fine saccharide powder and then cooling to solidify the bond between the core and the coating particles. The ratio of saccharide to maltitol core particles is between 15 and 200 parts by weight.
