1419209 Halogeno-nitrodiphenylethers ISHIHARA SANGYO KAISHA Ltd 14 Feb 1974 [20 Feb 1973] 6781/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises 2,2<SP>1</SP>-dichloro-4-trifluoromethyl - 4<SP>1</SP> - nitrodiphenylether, 2- chloro - 4 - trifluoromethyl - 21 - fluoro - 41- nitrodiphenylether, 2,6,2<SP>1</SP> - trichloro - 4 - trifluoromethyl - 41 - nitrodiphenylether and 2,6- dichloro - 4 - trifluoromethyl - 2<SP>1</SP> - fluoro - 4<SP>1</SP>- nitrodiphenyl ether which may be prepared by condensation of a 2-chloro- or 2,6-dichloro-4- trifluoromethyl halobenzene with a 2-halophenol in the presence of an alkaline compound followed by nitration of the resulting diphenylether at the 4<SP>1</SP>-position. 2 - Chloro - 4 - trifluoromethyl - 21 - fluorodiphenylether is prepared by condensation of ofluorophenol and 2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylchlorobenzene in DMSO in the presence of KOH. Herbicidal compositions useful in dry (upland) or wet (paddy) fields comprise a compound as set out above together with an inert diluent or carrier and optionally together with other herbicidal, insecticidal or fungicidal compounds or fertilizers.
