Abstract
1419158 Hydrogenated polydiene glycol ester copolymers HITACHI Ltd 19 Nov 1973 [29 Nov 1972] 53523/73 Heading C3P Unsaturated polyester resin compositions comprise (1) a polycondensate of a hydrogenated polydiene glycol having an average of at least 1À4 terminal ester-forming functions and at least one acrylic compound of formula CH 2 = CRCOR<SP>1</SP> where R is H or C 1-10 alkyl and R<SP>1</SP> is hydroxyl, C 1-10 alkoxy or halogen, and (2) a copolymerizable olefinically unsaturated monomer. The glycol may be prepared by polymerizing a conjugated diene in the presence of sodium or lithium, reacting the living polymer obtained with an epoxide and hydrogenating the product in the presence of Raney nickel. The acrylic compound may be acrylic or methacrylic acid, chloride or methyl or ethyl ester, which may optionally be used in admixture with dibasic acids or the chlorides, anhydrides or esters thereof. The comonomer may be styrene, tbutyl styrene, vinyl toluene, divinyl toluene, divinyl benzene, vinyl acetate and methyl and ethyl acrylate and methacrylate. The compositions may contain fillers, e.g. silica, alumina, calcium carbonate, quartz, mica and carbon black; and mould release agents, e.g. zinc stearate; and may be polymerized in the presence of free radical catalysts, e.g. organic peroxide, optionally with amine or metal soap accelerators. Examples describe the copolymerization of styrene with reaction products of methyl methacrylate with (1-3 and 7-10) hydrogenated polybutadiene glycol, (5) hydrogenated polypentadiene glycol and (6) hydrogenated polyisoprene glycol, and with reaction products of methacrylyl chloride with (4) hydrogenated butadiene/styrene copolymer glycol; and the copolymerization of reaction products of methyl methacrylate and hydrogenated polybutadiene glycol with (II) vinyl toluene and (12) t-butyl styrene.
