Abstract

1419103 Ultrafiltration of electro-phoresis bath DORR-OLIVER Inc 14 Nov 1972 [2 May 1972] 52581/72 Heading C7B An electro-phoretic deposition apparatus comprises a tank 52 divided into first and second compartments by an ultrafiltration membrane, the first compartment containing a polymeric coating material disposed in a liquid medium, and a liquid medium being pumped from the second compartment so that liquid flows from the first to the second compartment through the membrane. The liquid medium may be removed at a rate to provide a flow through the membrane of 5-100 galls/sq ft per day. In Fig. 2 a metal sheet 57 is made the anode in a paint bath 54. Tubular cathode unit 62 is coated with ultrafiltration membrane 63. Liquid is withdrawn from the centre of the tube 62 via pipe 64, holding tank 66 and vacuum pump 68. The tube may be made of porous sintered metal or may comprise a metal grid 93. It may itself form the cathode or have a cathode member 91 disposed within it. A layer of cardboard may be disposed between the membrane and the tube. The membrane may be polycarbonates, polyvinyl chlorides, polyamides, acrylic resins, polystyrene, styrene acrylo nitrile, polysulphones or acetal polymers. The sintered metal tube of the cathode unit may have pore size 20-100Š. The liquid medium may be water containing detergents, ketones and alcohols. The bath may be agitated by a magnetic stirrer. The deposited polymer may contain a pigment e.g. TiO 2 , carbon black and iron oxide. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1301515.
