Abstract

1418797 Rotary internal combustion engines M KAMIYA 6 March 1973 10853/73 Heading F1F A rotary internal combustion engine comprises intersecting toroidal cavities 7, 8 around which pistons 5, 6 move in a continuous circular motion. Each cavity 7, 8 has suction and exhaust ports 11, 14 and 12, 15 respectively each controlled by a rotary disc valve fixed to the shaft 3 or 4 with which the respective piston rotates. The cavities 7, 8 also have respective compressed gas ports 18, 19 connected to combustion chambers 17, 16 in the opposite cavity by passages 31, 31', Fig. 4. In operation, beginning from the position of 6a, it can be seen that piston 6 has just thrust compressed fuel/air mixture to combustion chamber 16 via compressed gas port 19. At the same time, piston 5 is compressing gas in the chamber communicating with its leading end B. The charge is ignited in chamber 16 and the piston 5 is driven and its front end B thrusts compressed charge to the other combustion chamber 17, Fig. 6b, whilst piston 6 inducts air through suction port 12 and also exhausts the products of the previous combustion through exhaust port 15. The charge in chamber 17 is then ignited and piston 6 is driven whilst its front end B' compresses the previously inducted charge, Fig. 6c, the piston 5 meanwhile discharging its combustion products through port 14 while taking in a fresh charge through port 9. Eventually the situation of Fig. 6d is reached where piston 6 is just about to finish compression of charge into combustion chamber 16 for ignition in the position of Fig. 6a.
