1418679 Sewing machine JAMES CASH MACHINE CO 13 Dec 1972 [22 Dec 1971] 57488/72 Heading D1G A multi-needle sewing machine, particularly one for sewing straight or zig zag seams on long sheets of material, is providing with 'dual' sewing heads 30 each comprising two needle driving mechanisms located one on either side of a vertical plane P and driven by a common drive 70. The mechanism is arranged so that the needles operate 180‹ out of phase with each other to provide better balance. Two operating shafts 40 are driven by shaft 70 in opposite directions, each shaft 40 presenting a crank pin (43, Fig. 11A not shown) connected by pitman 44 to a vertically guided pin 45 carrying a rod 46 secured to a needle bar 41. A link 62 secured to the crank pin (43) is connected to one arm of a take up lever 63 connected to one end of a radius link 65 secured at its other end to a fixed post 66. The crank pin is adjustably secured in crank web 42 to permit the position of link 62, and thus the action of the take up lever 63 to be varied. Presser foot operation. A sheave 55 encircling an eccentric on one shaft 70 oscillates a rookshaft 52 provided with a member 57 which actuates presser bar rods 58, 59 connected to their respective presser foot bars 51. In a modification, (Figs. 11 and 12 not shown) the needle driving and take up mechanisms on each bar 40 are duplicated at each end of the bar, and a shorter needle bar is provided for each 'dual head'. The machine comprises a fixed base frame 1 presenting an access passage 6 and rails 9 accepting rollers 15 of an A frame 10 which supports the heads 30. A motor within the frames drives a follower 18 engaging a cam groove 17 on a roller 16 mounted on the base frame 1, the A frame consequently moving back and forth along rails 9. Two sheets of material from rollers at 20, 21 pass under passage 6 and up to the needle area, where they are joined by another sheet from roller 22 before passing between tensioning nip rollers (23 Fig. 1 not shown) before reaching the A frame and between feeding nip rollers (24) after leaving the A. frame, a take up roll 25 being provided. The feeding and take up rollers are driven from the motor in the A frame.
