Abstract

1418628 Internal shoe drum brakes AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 6 Dec 1972 [16 Dec 1971] 58497/71 Heading F2E Brake shoes 19, 20 are applied by hydraulic pistons 13, 14 when liquid pressure is applied in space 16, and also by a wedge 26A applied by a parking-brake spring 44 which is normally lifted by pneumatic or hydraulic piston 41, the volume enclosed between pistons 13, 14 and a piston 47 connected to the wedge being arranged to be constant during downward movement of the wedge under the action of the spring. Because the cylinder 12 is single acting, in rotational direction A, both shoes are selfenergizing, but in the reverse direction, only shoe 19 is self-energizing. Lateral movement of the shoes is prevented by steady pins (69, Fig. 3B, not shown) having adjustable swivelable seatings at each end and carrying a compression spring. As shown in Fig. 2, manual slack take-up is achieved by a bolt 65, located by a detent spring 68 engaging notches 67 in a carrier sleeve 66. In an alternative form, Fig. 4, the bolt head is serrated and engages in a circular serrated spring 88 carried by the shoe-end. A bolt (60, Fig. 3A, not shown) is provided for manual release of the brake if the fluid pressure fails to lift the wedge.
