Abstract

1418471 Adjusting suspension height DUNLOP Ltd 19 March 1973 [23 March 1972] 13653/72 Heading B7D [Also in Division F2] A fluid control valve for use in an air suspension system for vehicles has an inlet valve and an outlet valve operated by a common actuating member and is adjusted by moving the whole of each valve bodily with respect to the housing. A source of air at pressure is connected to the inlet 23, the inlet-outlet 36 is connected to the air spring and air is exhausted through an outlet port 42. The housing 1 is attached to the vehicle and the pivoted operating arm 4, attached to an axle, operates the common actuating member 3 via a spring-loaded follower and cam arrangement-see Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) and a fork-shaped arm 5. The actuating member 3 is in the form of a damping piston to provide a delay between the occurrence of a relative movement between the vehicle chassis and the axle and the commencement of corrective action by the air spring. Member 3 operates the inlet and outlet screw members 24, 43 via axially displaceable push rods 9, 10 respectively which are sealed in low friction sleeves 38, 40. A non-return valve 29 prevents flow of air from the spring in the event of failure of the air pressure source. The inlet and exhaust valves are screw threaded in bores 22, 41 to provide the necessary adjustment and are locked in place by locking rings 65. 0-rings 63 seal the valve body to the housing and a split ring 64 is placed between the locking ring and the 0-ring. In other embodiments the operating arm is attached directly to a cam which operates the push rods, the damping arrangement being omitted.
