Abstract

1417763 Coated products GULF OIL CANADA LTD 13 Feb 1973 [21 Feb 1972] 6882/72 Heading B2E A method of forming a continuous film coating of polymeric resin on the surface of a substrate comprises: (1) selecting an aqueous polymeric resin dispersion obtained by emulsion polymerising a mixture of copolymerisable monomers, at least one of which homopolymerises to a polymer which from aqueous dispersion, forms films below room temperature, and at least one other of which similarly forms films above room temperature; (2) applying said dispersion to a substrate to form a continuous web film thereon; (3) drying said web film below the minimum film forming temperature (as defined by ASTM method D2354-68) of the resin, to form a discontinuous coating of resin particles and (4) heating said coating in (3) to fuse the resin particles to form a continuous film coating. The dispersion may be in the form of a paint, containing a pigment. The preferred resin is a copolymer of 15-70 wt. % of a vinyl carboxylate (such as vinyl acetate), 20-75 wt. % of vinyl chloride and 5-25 wt. % of an alkyl acrylate.
