Abstract

1417574 Surface treated pigments LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 25 April 1973 [13 May 1972] 22581/72 Heading C1N Pigment particles are treated with a combination of organic agents comprising at least one hydrophilic compound selected from polyhydroxy alcohols and polymers thereof, polycarboxylic acids and hydroxy carboxylic acids, said hydroxyalcohols, carboxylic or hydroxy carboxylic acid having 2-6 C atoms, and at least one hydrophobic compound selected from hydrocarbons having a M.Wt. of at least 170, polysiloxanes, aliphatic phthalic acid esters, fatty alcohols with at least 6 carbon atoms and 1,2-diols with at least 10 carbon atoms. The hydrophilic compound may be ethylene or propylene glycol (monomer or polymer), trimethylol propane or ethane, pentaerythritol, adipic acid or lactic acid. The hydrophobic compound may be liquid paraffin, paraffin wax, polydimethyl siloxane, dioctylphthalate, hexanol, decanol or tetradecan-1,2-diol. The pigment is preferably anatase or rutile TiO 2 ; others are listed. It may have one or more inorganic coatings; conventional coatings and coating methods are described. The organic agents may be mixed with an aqueous pulp of the pigment, followed by drying and fluid energy milling. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,157,060 and 896,067.
