Abstract
1417550 Epoxides IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 Feb 1973 [2 Feb 1972] 4835/72 Heading C2C Epoxides are prepared by passing an olefinic compound in the vapour phase together with oxygen and at a temperature below 300‹ C. over a solid substance comprising a copper compound capable of being oxidized by the oxygen and has a surface area of at least 5 square metres/gram and separating an epoxide derivative of the olefinic compound from the vapour products formed by resultant oxidation of the olefinic compound in the presence of the copper compound. The preferred starting olefines include ethylene, cyclohexene and butenes and, particularly, propylene. The copper compound may be supported, e.g. on alumina, silica, alumina-silica, titania, aluminium phosphate, zinc oxide, zirconia, silicon carbide, magnesium phosphate, calcium phosphate or titanium phosphate. The copper catalyst is preferably prepared by spray-drying a solution of a precursor copper compound, e.g. an aqueous solution of a cupric salt, especially a salt of an inorganic oxy acid, followed by controlled reduction of the solid material so obtained. An example describes the oxidation of propylene to propylene oxide using a catalyst obtained by dissolving cuprous oxide and ammonium molybdate in the presence of air in water containing ammonia, spraydrying the resulting solution and calcining the resulting fine powder.
