Abstract

1417429 Card selector BELL & HOWELL CO 23 Nov 1972 [2 Dec 1971] 54179/72 Heading G4M A random access card selection device is disclosed. Cards (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown), e.g. microfilm, microfiche, of paper, cardboard or plastic are stored in a plurality of cartridges 10, which cartridges may be accessed using a rotary turret or a Ferris wheel type store. Each cartridge has two decks D I , D II , each card having a tab T which lies in a different transverse position within its deck. A panel 15 is shifted so that a scale S I or S II , representing decks D I , D II , respectively, is visible through an aperture. Then an indicator 33 is set to a scale position representing the desired card, which indicator correspondingly moves a picking head PC, through pulley 37. The cartridge is placed on the panel which actuates a microswitch to cause a motorcontrolled picker 25 to bend down over the cartridge to extract the desired card, which card is selected by the positioning of head PC. After selection, picker 25 is vibrated to dislodge any unwanted cards which have stuck to the desired card. The picker comprises a set of teeth, preferably triangular metal ones, which are loosely supported on an arm. When the picker 25 descends on to the cards an electromagnet is energized which, using a rod arrangement (Figs. 7-12, not shown), compresses the teeth and grips the desired card. The selected card is then raised into a horizontal position for manual removal.
