Abstract

1417234 Heat-and-serve packages for meat products OSCAR MAYER & CO Inc 13 March 1973 [31 July 1972] 12050/73 Heading B8C A compact, generally flat heat-and-serve, package of meat product comprises a disposable, oven-heatable, tray 6 which has two opposed pairs 16, 17 and 18, 20 of interconnected, foldable, sides, one pair 16, 17 of which is folded inwardly and downwardly over the corresponding edges of a filling, e.g. of pre-fried sliced bacon 32, while the other pair 18, 20 extend outwardly and unfolded, and which is folded over upon itself about a score line 7 so that the sides 18, 20 overlie each other, the filled tray being snugly enclosed in an envelope 8 of disposable film, having air, moisture, and grease barrier properties, and the foldable sides of the tray being erectable, on removal of the film and undoubling of the tray, to form a continuously upstanding side wall around the bottom of the tray. The tray is formed from a blank 10 made of a laminate of cardboard and aluminium foil, or, of a sheet of aluminium, the four corners each being formed by folding down a tab 28, separated from the respective side 16 or 17 by a respective cut 21, 22, 23, 24, about a score line 26 and glueing it to the adjacent end of the respective folded down side 16, or 17. The bacon slices 32 are preferably covered with grease resistant sheet 50, made, e.g. of vegetable parchment, the outer edges of the sides 18, 20 being cut and scored to provide locking tabs 39, 43, the latter having ears 41-42. The envelope 8, made, e.g. of P.V.C. or polycarbonate, may be initially a preformed bag. Alternatively, in a continuous packaging operation, the envelope may be formed from two continous films which have folded trays placed therebetween and which are sealed together around all four sides of each tray the films being transversely cut to separate the trays. The films are preferably laminates in a supercooled amorphous condition, each package preferably being evacuated before sealing. In a modification, Figs. 7, 8 not shown, each corner is provided with four score lines (61-64) so that, at each corner, there is a set of four thicknesses of tray material. The product may be in the form of patties of pre-fried sausage, Fig. 11, not shown, or links of prefried sausages, Fig. 12, not shown.
