Abstract

1417228 Hydroxysulphones AGENCE NATIONALE DE VALORISATION DE LA RECHERCHE 17 Aug 1973 [25 Aug 1972] 38914/73 Heading C2C Hydroxysulphones of formula where R is optionally substituted alkyl, aralkyl or aryl, Q is H or an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radical, X is H or methyl and Y is H, methyl, ethyl or vinyl are prepared by reacting an epoxide with QOH 2 SO a R in the presence of an anionizing agent, e.g. an alkali metal alcoholate, hydride or amide or an organometallic compound. Those compounds in which Q is aliphatic or cycloaliphatic are claimed per se. The hydroxysulphones may be reduced to alcohols of formula QCH 2 CH 2 C(OH)XY or reacted with a base to give alcohols of formula Examples prepare 3,7-dimethyl-5-phenylsulphonyl-1,6-octadien-3-ol which is reduced with Na amalgam to linalool and an isomer thereof; 3 - methyl - 5 - phenylsulphonyl - I - penten- 3 - ol; 7 - methyl - 5 - phenylsulphonyl - 6- octen - 3 - ol; 5 - phenylsulphonyl - 3 - pentanol; and 9 - (2,6,6 - trimethyl - 1 - cyclohexenyl) - 5- phenylsulphonyl - 3,7 - dimethyl - 1,6,8 - nonatrienol.
