Abstract

1417161 Measuring fluid flow electrically LUCAS INDUSTRIES Ltd 14 Feb 1973 [24 Feb 1972] 8558/72 Headings G1A and G1N A fluid flow measuring apparatus comprises a tube 11 through which the fluid flows, first and second sensing means 13 at first and second points spaced apart along the tube, and which sense passage of a mercury globule 12 carried by the fluid flow. Each sensing means consists of a light source 15 and a photo-transistor 14, the first sensing means, i.e. that at the lower position with respect to the tube, acting to open switch 21 when the globule passes whereby capacitor 18 is charged from D.C. supply voil 16, and the second sensing means acting to changeover switch 19 when the globule passes whereby charging of the capacitor is halted and the voltage to which the capacitor is charged is indicated on measuring device 22. When the measurement has been made valve 13a is opened which allows the globule to fall to the bottom of the tube and at the same time switch 19 is changed over and switch 21 is closed to discharge the capacitor in readiness for the next test. The apparatus is intended to detect fluid leakage from a first to a second chamber which second chamber has an outlet communicating with an inlet 10 extending into a limb of the U-tube 11.
