Abstract
1416806 Steering aircraft ground wheels DOWTY ROTOL Ltd 4 April 1974 [11 April 1973] 17494/73 Heading B7H In a steerable nosewheel undercarriage including a telescopic shock absorber 11 formed by an upper leg member 12 for attachment to an aircraft and a lower leg member 14 carrying a pair of wheels W, a cuff member 33 rotatably mounted on the upper leg member and coupled by torque links 31, 28 to the lower leg member is turned to steer the wheels W by rack-andpinion steering mechanism in which the pinion teeth run out of mesh with the rack outside a predetermined range of turning movement so that turning of the wheels through a greater angle is allowed when the aircraft is towed. The steering mechanism comprises a pinion shaft 35 connected by splines to the cuff member 33 and formed with pinion teeth 38 extending only part-way around the shaft and engaging the teeth 39 of a rack 40 upon which act pistons 41, 42 slidable in hydraulic cylinders 45, 46 fitted to the upper leg member 12. A cam 55 and feed-back roller 56 produce a follow up effect on a valve controlling supply of fluid to the cylinders 45, 56, and stop members 57, 58 determine the extremes of turning movement. A constant-diameter rack restraining ring 59 engages the end teeth 61, 62 of the rack to ensure that the rack teeth are held clear of the pinion after disengagement and that the teeth re-engage smoothly. A shimmy damper 63 comprises annular friction members 73, 74, 75 interposed between friction plates 69, 70 and 70, 72 which are splined to the cuff member 33 and to a housing 65 on the upper leg member 12 respectively and are loaded by disc springs 76. The lower leg member 14 is provided with a piston 16 slidable in the upper leg member 12 and a damping valve 19 which restricts flow between a liquid chamber 20 formed in the upper leg member 12 and a liquid chamber 21 formed in the lower leg member 14 and separated by a floating piston 22 from a pressurized nitrogen chamber 23.
