Abstract

1416405 Preparation of particulate styrenetype polymers SEKISUI KAGAKU KOGYO KK and SEKISUI KASEIHIN KOGYO KK 27 July 1973 35994/73 Heading C3P Particles of styrenic polymer (i.e. homo- or co-polymers of styrene and derivatives thereof) are prepared by suspending in water, styrenic polymer particles having a size of 0À4 to 1À8 mm. and adding to the suspension a styrenic monomer, an initiator and a polymerization retarder having a molecular weight of at least 200 in an amount of 1/200 to 1/15 mole per mole of initiator, while maintaining the suspension under conditions such that styrenic monomer absorbed by the polymer particles present is polymerized to form larger particles of substantially uniform size. Preferably the final product particles are constituted from 5-60 wt. per cent of the originally suspended particles and 95-40 wt. per cent of the monomer(s). Other agents such as flame retardants, colourants, lubricants and foaming agents (to produce foamable particles) may also be present during polymerization. Examples of suitable retarders and their molecular weights are: 3,5-dit - butyl - 4 - hydroxytoluene (220); 1,1 - bis- (4 - hydroxyphenyl) - cyclohexane (268); 4,4- butylidene - bis - (3 - methyl - 6 - t - butyl phenol) (383 ) ; 1,3,5-trimethyl-2,4,6-tris-3,5-dit - butyl - 4 - hydroxybenzyl benzene (775); 2,21 - methylene - bis - (6 - t - butyl - 4 - methylphenol) (352); dilaurylthiodipropionate (515); 4,4<SP>1</SP> - thiobis - (3 - methyl - 6 - t - butyl phenol (359); N,N<SP>1</SP> - di - # - naphthyl - pphenylene diamine (360) and N-phenyl-N-isopropyl-p-phenylene diamine (226À3). In the examples, the polymer is homopolystyrene or a styrene/methylmethacrylate copolymer. Foaming agents specified are propane, butane, pentane, cyclobutane, cyclopentane, methyl chloride, dichlorodifluoromethane, propylene isobutane, butene-1, cis- and trans-butene-2, isobutene, neopentane, butadiene, ethyl chloride, vinyl chloride, dichlorofluoromethane, chlorotrifluoromethane, and chlorodifluoromethane. In Example 14, n-pentane is used to produce foamable particles.
