Abstract

1415861 Welding fluxes CENTRE DE RECHERCHES DE PONT-A-MOUSSON 18 Oct 1972 [18 Oct 1971] 46613/72 Heading C7M [Also in Division B3] In the heterogeneous welding of iron-carbon alloys the filler material comprises at least one of Mo, Nb, Ta, Ti, V, W and Zr (carbide formers) and at least one of Ca, Ce or other rare earth metals, Mg, Y or compounds thereof (nodularizing agents) and optionally slag and/or protective gas formers, the balance, apart from incidental elements and impurities, of which Mn must be less than 0.4%, being Fe, each unit weight of filler material containing 5-20% of the cabide former(s) and 0.4- 10% of the nodularizing agent(s), based on the weight of weld bead produced from said unit weight. In examples the filler material may be ( I ) in the form of a powder mixture of iron grains with 30-50% of a 50% Si 50% R.E. alloy and 10- 20% of Fe 80% V put in the butt joint prior to welding using a coated electrode for depositing pure iron, or a non-consumable gas shielded electrode, for electric arc welding; (2) A mild steel wire coated with a composition consisting of:- the coating representing 60% of the weight of the core wire; (3) As in (2) but the Mg alloy is replaced by 6-15% of Si 50% R.E. 50% alloy and 0-10% of FeTi containing 50% Ti; (4) As in (3) but the Si R.E. alloy is replaced by 6-15% of Fe 60% Si 40% and 6-15% R.E. fluoride; (5) An Fe 8-16% V core is coated with a composition consisting of:- the coating representing 40% of the weight of the core wire; (6) A filled tube of mild steel containing a mixture of:- (these percentages are based on the total weight of the filler material).
